London based custom Harley-Davidson® designer Charlie Stockwell of Warr’s Harley-Davidson, Europe’s oldest Harley dealership, introduces his latest creation. ‘Unorthodox’.

It’s a striking distance from the designs we are used to from Stockwell and Warr’s H-D. Best known for his award winning and trend setting vintage designs, no-one was expecting such a bike to be wheeled out of the Warr’s workshop on the King’s Road in the heart of Chelsea. He dared to break tradition and did exactly that. A breath taking cocktail of chrome and carbon fibre. Neo-vintage styling. No leather or tassels on this Harley.

Nearly everything on ‘Unorthodox’ is hand made by Stockwell himself. The original Harley-Davidson® Fatboy® was stripped down leaving just the engine and chassis. The oil tank was removed from beneath the seat and the chassis re-shaped to drop the solid one-of-a-kind carbon fibre solo saddle to an extreme slammed ride height. A new oil tank was fabricated to fit inside the original, tear-drop shaped, Fatboy fuel tank. Stockwell crafted the high-low dual exhaust system which rather cleverly houses the rear lights in the carbon mufflers. To enhance the bikes fierce stance only a pair of MotoGP spec Ohlins front forks will do. It doesn’t stop there, custom made CNC triple trees mount the forks to the frame. Brembo monobloc calipers are fitted to deal with the brute force of the new tuned 113ci Screamin’Eagle H-D Engine which has been treated with glossy black powder coat and the cooling fins Diamond Cut for a show sparkle. Carbon fibre, race style clip-on handlebars are fitted with Performance Machine controls to match the huge wheels wrapped in Metzeler rubber, 3″ open primary drive and foot controls.

The CR&S “DUU” is a custom concept motorcycle, which was unveiled at the EICMA Milano International Bike Show in November 2009. The DUU is a naked, two-seater premium motorcycle with a modular layout. Two western motorcycle cultures have been synthesized inside the “DUU”: a sporty European rolling chassis powered by a muscular American V-twin. The DUU is said to provide an intuitive ride, with technological innovations and assertive styling.

The CR&S DUU is equipped with the new S&S “X-Wedge” engine with a capacity of 1916cc (117c.i.). Last year S&S celebrated its 50th Anniversary by creating this unique engine as a synthesis of its experience and technology. The X-Wedge is a new engine in the American tradition of big twins, which meets the latest emission and noise standards, but with a special character and high performance.

Think back 70 or 75 years to a time when design began to break away from the traditional and elaborate rationalism that ensued for hundreds of years. As the styles of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Streamline and Zigzag Moderne emerged after the Industrial Revolution, designers as well as consumers fully embraced the Age of the Machine. Shiny chrome surfaces lay across curving forms or over expansive horizontal planes and glorified a dynamic new world on the move.

And suddenly, design was muted as World War II approached. Inspiration was buried away, along with some innovative and visually stunning design work. Skip ahead to 2005 when some curious members of BMW Classic opened a box and found the R7 bike 75 assembled – although not in shining condition. The engine was corroded, the metalwork was in dire shape, the battery was unusable, but the opportunity for restoration could not be ignored.

Bike lanes aren’t everywhere, but that shouldn’t bother you once you get hold of this “LightLane.” This concept allows you to take a bike lane with you, which basically means that lasers are used to “project” an illuminated bike lane around you. It could possibly also give you the authority to blurt cocky lines like “The bike lane is where my bike is” or things like that; provided you do not get killed first.
