You could say I was brainwashed as a toddler. My dad has been a rodder since the ’50s so it’s in my blood. I built this truck because I wanted a change. When I was in high school my dad and I built a modern-designed ’52 Ford custom, but during college while studying Illustration/Graphic Design my tastes changed and I gravitated towards the design styles of the early 20th century through the 1960s and I wanted a car that reflected that change. I also wanted an older car; having a custom was fun but I had always wanted a pre-’48 car and Model As are still pretty reasonable to build with the budget I had.

I was a punk rock kid looking for something new. I was working with my father in the family tool and die business and going to night school taking welding classes. I started going to Rat Fink Reunion shows at Mooneyes with my friends Don Misraji and Rick Stine. We met Taco Bill, who was really into mini bikes and had the greatest collection around. One Saturday Don and I went to look at a mini bike at Taco Bill’s, and while Bill and Don were talking mini bikes, I caught a glimpse of his 1931 Ford sedan. He had it all ripped apart and I could see where he was going with it. He was mocking up the frame, and since I was a welder and machinist I starting thinking that I could build one of these.

In the wide and wonderful world of hot rods, the story behind the trio of ’32 Ford roadsters presented in this story has the option of being viewed as either extremely diverse (in the case of the owners and builders) or incredibly similar (by the materials, parts, color, and style selected). Starting with the people, each of these cars began in the mind of its unique and individual owner long before the first bolt was ever turned. The look of each of these cars originated decades ago at the dawn of hot rodding, and photographic examples of this period can be found in the pages of Don Montgomery’s hot rod history books-themselves the blueprints for multiple generations who were not there to witness and feel the excitement of WWII-era hot rodding.
