Good news, HOT ROD readers. You just thought you were crazy. In truth, you’re only mildly colorful. Oh sure, you’ve often reflected on how your taste in transportation trends toward the outlandish, if not the extreme. And given all those long hours you’ve spent in the garage building such machines, friends and family have mentioned (frequently) how your behavior might be described as, well, obsessive. However, when it comes to over-the-top road vehicles and the mentally questionable commitment required to construct them, you’d have a hard time matching Joe Skonecki. Just look at what he built. Compared with him, you can consider yourself almost normal. This dude is totally nuts, and we mean that in the best possible way. We come in praise of this form of insanity.

In the Pantheon of American Muscle Cars, the Chevelle has staked a rock-solid position. When it first rolled off the production lines in 1964 you get it with 120hp V6 or, either a 283- or 327- V8, that with the SS set-up would produce 300 bhp. Chevrolet would continue to produce the Chevelle until 1977, during which time it would get ever-increasing boosts of horsepower during the muscle-car salad days of the late sixties, and reach the zenith of it’s performance in 1970 when it rolled off the line with 454 cubic-inches capable of turning out 450 horsepower. As with all muscle cars, the early ’70′s saw a continued roll-back on power thanks to higher fuel and insurance prices, as well as the introduction of smog equipment. When the Chevelle badge was retired in 1977 the basic chassis/body style carried on under the Malibu name–de-tuned and de-fanged.

Like many prize-winning custom trucks, Havoc was built to the highest standards of craftsmanship. Fittingly, Havoc captured a Top Five Early prize in the Truck of the YearEarly competition at the Goodguys Lone Star Nationals. Lone Star show participants and attendees realize that any of the finalists are worthy of the grand prize. However, for Havoc’s owner, the greatest pleasure comes when he turns the ignition key. Driving the streets of his hometown must feel much like those movie luminaries felt in their grand made-to-order Hollywood boulevard cruisers.

In the wide and wonderful world of hot rods, the story behind the trio of ’32 Ford roadsters presented in this story has the option of being viewed as either extremely diverse (in the case of the owners and builders) or incredibly similar (by the materials, parts, color, and style selected). Starting with the people, each of these cars began in the mind of its unique and individual owner long before the first bolt was ever turned. The look of each of these cars originated decades ago at the dawn of hot rodding, and photographic examples of this period can be found in the pages of Don Montgomery’s hot rod history books-themselves the blueprints for multiple generations who were not there to witness and feel the excitement of WWII-era hot rodding.
