This was not, however, the RPU’s first trip to the GNRS. The car was there the year before in unfinished bare metal, and the year before that as a finished frame-both times in the display booth for the Jalopy Shoppe.

Sure, you’ll see quite a few nicely-restored examples and a plethora of drag cars, but nothing that will compare to George Paul’s award-winning ’80 Z28. And it’s not as if these cars aren’t plentiful and still affordable-they are. They make great projects, it just seems like owners of these particular rides have yet to be provoked with the appropriate template on provisions to give these cars proper street cred … until now, that is.

Another shocker is that this project went from a bunch of steel and a rusted shell to a running rod in just three and a half months, although Steve estimates a good 1,000 hours of labor were put in during that time.In addition to the diesel, Steve’s rod also dares to be different with an agricultural theme. The front axle was lifted from a coal mine truck, and John Deere green is seen throughout the vehicle. What’s more, Steve drives the thing everywhere-in fact, the six-cylinder diesel has been a great asset in fuel mileage, as the Dodge has achieved an incredible 25 mpg on freeway jaunts. What’s next? Well, the ‘cage is SCTA-legal for Bonneville. As soon as Steve finds another gear, and with the addition of a transbrake and some taller slicks, 10-second passes should be no problem. Oh, and that’s without the extra 300 to 500 hp available from the progressive NX nitrous system. Whether it’s at his home track in Billings, Montana, or cruising the Strip in Las Vegas, this one-of-a-kind rod always draws a crowd.

In the Pantheon of American Muscle Cars, the Chevelle has staked a rock-solid position. When it first rolled off the production lines in 1964 you get it with 120hp V6 or, either a 283- or 327- V8, that with the SS set-up would produce 300 bhp. Chevrolet would continue to produce the Chevelle until 1977, during which time it would get ever-increasing boosts of horsepower during the muscle-car salad days of the late sixties, and reach the zenith of it’s performance in 1970 when it rolled off the line with 454 cubic-inches capable of turning out 450 horsepower. As with all muscle cars, the early ’70′s saw a continued roll-back on power thanks to higher fuel and insurance prices, as well as the introduction of smog equipment. When the Chevelle badge was retired in 1977 the basic chassis/body style carried on under the Malibu name–de-tuned and de-fanged.

But when his director of R&D, Jim Schenck, came to him with a new idea for one, it was obvious what needed to be done. Schenck designed a tube-chassis car that handled like a son of a gun and wore a ’33 Ford suit. In Smith’s words, “Today, most guys get their parts from a variety of sources-say a frame here, a body there, a front end, and so on. Jim pitched me on the idea of using the FFR product template on the hot rod-not a donor car, but rather a complete kit with all-new parts save for running gear.”

As the Oakland gathering became more spectator-driven, the entrants changed to purpose-built showmobiles. With few exceptions, the one-off formula continues today and is aptly illustrated by Fred Warren’s “Shockwave,” Oakland’s 50th Anniversary AMBR winner.

Technically, Warren’s wonder began nine years ago during a student design project at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Foose would later collaborate with his father Sam, Boyd Coddington, and Troy Trepanier on a number of trendsetting rods and based his model on the amalgamation of shapes gleaned from a ’33 Plymouth three-window coupe and a ’70 Cuda. In fact, Foose’s model appeared on page 14 in HRM’s April ’91 swimsuit issue and served as a preview of the Plymouth Prowler and the creation of Warren’s Shockwave.

So it should come as no surprise when John Swanson of Huntington Beach, California, gobbled up 12 years to build his A/V-8.
